Back to Back

A partner exercise that challenges core strength and cooperation.
- 6+ years
- Group size: 2+
- Duration: 15 min
- Partner exercise
- Mountains, forests and fields
- Gym / Sports hall
- Open space
- Gym Mat
The pair stands back to back, linking arms. Then, one partner slowly bends forward while the other leans backward. This lifts the first partner, who then lies horizontally on the second partner's back. Finally, the legs are straightened vertically upwards.
Once the pair feels secure with the movement, they can gently begin to move back and forth alternately, 'swinging' together.
Safety
- ensure participants are well warmed up before starting, to reduce the risk of injury
- pair participants who are roughly similar in height and weight
- use mats or other soft surfaces
Variation
Once the exercise feels natural:
- incorporate the movement into a small 'sequence' where you smoothly and fluidly enter and exit the swinging motion
- try simple leg 'tricks': splits, wide stances, small rotations
- for a more advanced variation, the exercise can conclude with the pair rolling completely over and landing in a controlled manner on the opposite side
Adjust the tempo, the amplitude of the swinging, and the difficulty level according to the group's strength, confidence, and experience.
