Dice Courses

Varied and playful endurance training
- 11+ years
- Group size: 1+
- Duration: 30 min
- Alternative physical activities
- Gym / Sports hall
- Open space
- Snow / ice
- Cones
- Dice
In this exercise, dice are used to determine which course or challenge participants will complete.
For example, set up 6 courses, marked with cones and clear numbering, so that participants can easily see where to run after rolling the dice. The courses should have varying lengths and different types of challenges to provide good variety.
When the dice determine where to run, chance dictates the outcome. This shifts the focus from speed and comparison with others to the task itself. Participants run different rounds in varying orders, thus having less opportunity to directly compare themselves to each other.
Variations
- Determine how many rounds participants should run before a break, or set a total working time.
- Let participants vary their effort, for example: 'run at a steady pace', run with 50%, 80% or 100% effort.
- The exercise can also be performed on skis or skates.
- Perform the exercise with a ball.
- Include various obstacles or sub-tasks in the courses, for example: score a goal in one course, jump hurdles in another.
- Feel free to do the exercise outdoors, and utilize hills and terrain for an extra challenge.
