One of the children is the 'fish in the red sea' and stands at one end of the play area. Another child is the shark and stands in the middle of the area. All the other children line up at the opposite end.

The children standing together shout:

'The fish in the red sea,

what color must we have

to get across,

even if the fish is sleeping?'

The 'fish in the red sea' calls out a color, and the children who have this color on their clothes can cross freely to the other side. Those who do not have the color must try to get across without being caught by the shark.

Children who are caught become sharks themselves and help catch the others in the next round. The game continues until only one child remains. This child can be the 'fish in the red sea' in the next round and decide which color will be called out.
