Follow the leader

A safe and practical introduction to using maps in terrain.
- 6-15 years
- Group size: 5+
- Duration: 30 min
- Nature playground
- Orienteering
- Mountains, forests and fields
Divide into small groups with one leader (adult) per group. Each participant receives their own map, but without any control points marked. The leader walks or runs first, the children follow. Along the way, the children should pay attention to the map and try to see where they are at all times. When the leader stops, each person should point on the map where they think they are. Feel free to switch roles along the way, so that the children also get to walk or run first.
It's good to start with small groups. If you are unsure about the terrain yourself, go through the route beforehand and find clear map symbols and landmarks that are easy for the children to recognize.
Variation
- The leader can also be the only one with a map. The children then follow and should concentrate on remembering the terrain and the details they pass. When the leader stops, the children each get their own map and should try to mark where they believe they have walked or run.
- Start in an open terrain with many clear details that make it easy to orient oneself. As participants become more confident with the map, you can choose more challenging areas – for example, denser forest or more hilly terrain.
