Participants are divided into two teams. Both teams start by standing behind their respective goal lines, in their own goal zone. One team is designated to start with the frisbee; this team is called the defenders. The other team starts without the frisbee and is called the attackers.
The game begins with a player from the defending team throwing the frisbee as far as possible towards the attackers. While the frisbee is in the air, players run onto the field and position themselves where they wish to stand.
- If the frisbee goes past the goal zone area where the attackers started, it is brought back to the attackers' goal line.
- If the frisbee goes out of bounds over the sideline, an attacker retrieves it and places it on the field at the point where it went out.
The attacker who now has the frisbee must throw it to a teammate. When a player has the frisbee in hand, one foot must remain stationary at the same spot; the player is therefore not allowed to walk or run with the frisbee. This is similar to the rules in basketball.
When a player on the attacking team successfully receives the frisbee inside the opposing goal zone, the team scores one point. The scoring team keeps the frisbee, gathers in the goal zone where the point was made, and now becomes the defenders in the next round.
This is a non-contact game: it is not allowed to hold, push, or physically block opponents. The defending team can win the frisbee by:
- catching it in the air
- causing the attacking team to drop it on the ground
Additionally, an attacker holding the frisbee must throw it within eight seconds, while the nearest defender loudly counts to 'eight'.
Variation
Initially, you can allow the frisbee to hit the ground once between each pass, making it easier to get the game flowing.
Once participants are confident with the rules and technique, you can:
- require that the frisbee does not touch the ground between passes
- introduce an extra frisbee on the field to increase intensity and situational awareness challenges
