Ordinary mailboxes are painted in vibrant colors and clearly marked with the school's 'hiking box logo'. The boxes are placed around the school's local area, preferably in places that are either beautiful destinations themselves or are along a pleasant walking trail.
Inside each box, a lined notebook (or a numbered raffle book) and some pencils in a bag, preferably with a zipper, are placed. On the first 4-5 pages of the book, there should be columns showing how users should enter: name, class, date, and time.
At the school, a clear map of the local area is displayed, with all the hiking boxes marked. Feel free to use place names and pictures of each location, so it's easy to see where the boxes are. It should also state approximately how long it takes to walk to each hiking box.
Time can be allocated for walking or running to the hiking boxes during physical education, breaks, and other physical activity time at school and potentially in after-school care (SFO). Students visit the boxes and decide their own pace, whether they want to walk, jog, or run, and whether they want to go alone or with others. When they arrive at a box, they write their name, class, date, and time in the book. Students and parents can also be encouraged to use the hiking boxes in their free time.
