Human knot

Human knot

Make and untangle the knot

  • 3-16 years
  • Group size: 5-10
  • Duration: 15 min
  • Alternative physical activities
  • Mountains, forests and fields
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Indoor
  • Open space

All participants – except one – stand in a line holding hands. Together they create a “knot” by moving over, under and around each other without letting go of their neighbours’ hands. They can, for example, step over arms and legs, twist around, and change places until the group is satisfied with how tangled the knot has become.

When the knot is ready, they call in the last participant. This person now tries to untangle the knot by directing the others: asking them to turn around, step over or under each other, take a step forward or backward, and so on. Everyone gets a turn as the “solver”, and the person who manages to untangle the knot in the shortest time wins. There should not be more than 6–8 people in each group.

Tip: If someone has reduced mobility, you can use a skipping rope or a towel as an “extended arm” so that everyone is still connected in one chain, without everyone needing to move as much.
