Jump Relay

Jump Relay

A relay with a ball that challenges coordination skills.

  • 10+ years
  • Group size: 8+
  • Duration: 10 min
  • Relay
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space
  • Ball

Participants are divided into teams of four people. It is an advantage to avoid overly large teams, otherwise there will be a lot of waiting.

Teams line up in a row, with four cones placed at a suitable distance in front of each row. The first participant on each team holds a softball clamped between their feet. On signal, the participant hops zigzag, with feet together, between the cones and back to the next person in the line. If the ball is dropped, one must continue hopping from the spot where the ball slipped; one does not go back to the start.

Once everyone on the team has completed the first round, the next round can proceed in a different way, for example:

  • bouncing the ball
  • guiding the ball with the foot
  • crawling with the ball

Only imagination limits how the ball should be handled.

Transitions can also be varied from round to round. Examples:

  • the team must run a lap before the changeover
  • the ball must be rolled through the legs of the entire group
  • changeover without the ball being free on the floor

If cones are touched, a 'penalty' can be introduced, for example, extra time or a certain number of push-ups.

Variation

Set up more cones and a longer course if participants want more endurance.

The activity can also be carried out as 'sitting football': Participants sit on the floor with their bottoms on the ground and must guide the ball zigzag between the cones.

Use heavier or more challenging balls, such as a soccer ball or handball, to increase difficulty.

Increase the distance between the cones or add more technical requirements (e.g., one-legged hops only, backward hops, etc.).
