Two children swing the rope while the others jump. The swinging is rotated so that everyone gets to both jump and swing. The children jump one after another in a 'stream', meaning in and out continuously.

Suggestions for jump variations

  • three jumps per child, one empty swing in between each
  • two jumps per child, one empty swing in between each
  • one jump per child, one empty swing in between each
  • four jumps per child without an empty swing
  • four jumps per child, a new jumper enters after two empty swings, after two more empty swings the next enters, and so on.
  • two jumps per child, after one empty swing a new one enters, after another empty swing another new one enters and one child jumps out – there are always two children jumping simultaneously

These variations can be further developed by, for example:

  • jumping on one leg
  • jumping with crossed legs
  • varying the speed of the rope

Variation

The rope should be swung smoothly and without stopping between each participant. Here are two classic rhymes that can be used while the children are jumping:
