Jumping rope is both exciting and challenging. By varying how they jump, children can be inspired to learn new ways of moving.
Here are some suggested variations:
- Let children try different foot positions when jumping. Encourage them to find their own ways to jump – it makes the exercise more playful and creative.
- Once they have good control, they can try swinging the rope twice per jump.
- Jump in a squatting position. Also, try jumping while alternating knees from side to side.
- Jump from side to side while moving forward. Once that works, they can try the same backwards for an increased challenge.
- Move around and jump over natural or arranged obstacles, while the rope is in motion.
- Let children pair up and jump with the same rope. Eventually, they can try the other variations in pairs as well.
Adjust the difficulty and speed according to age and skill level, so that it feels both safe and challenging.
