Landgrab

A traditional playground game that works well on gravel, asphalt or snow
- 6-12 years
- Group size: 6-8
- Duration: 20 min
- Alternative physical activities
- Snow / ice
- Open space
- Chalk
Draw a large circle on the ground and divide it into equal “countries”. Mark a small circle in the middle as well. All participants choose their own country. One player stands in the middle circle and throws a stick straight up into the air. The country where the stick lands gets to start.
Each player has their own country and tries to make it larger by “taking” land from their neighbours.
When it is your turn, you stand inside your own country and stretch as far as you can without stepping over the line. Using the stick, you draw a new line which becomes your new border – this way, you expand your country. If you touch the line, your turn is over and play passes to someone else.
To choose the next player, a new person goes into the middle circle and throws the stick up into the air. The country where the stick lands takes the next turn. The player with the largest country when the game ends is the winner.
Variation
Let the turn order follow the order in which you are standing, so everyone gets regular chances to take part actively.
Instead of drawing with a stick, the participants can sit on their bottoms and use a foot to try to take land – still without touching the line.
