Letter Blocks

Letter Blocks

A relay game where players use letter blocks to create as many words as possible within a given time frame.

  • 3-10 years
  • Group size: 3+
  • Duration: 20 min
  • Relay
  • Physically Active Learning
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Indoor
  • Open space

Place the letter blocks in small groups on the floor, adapted to the number of groups/participants. Divide into groups of about three people per group. Avoid groups that are too large, as there will quickly be long waiting times between each time someone gets to run and participate.

Participants line up behind a starting line and wait for the start signal. The task is to create as many words as possible within a customized time frame, for example, three minutes. The time frame can be adjusted based on how many letter blocks each group has available.

There are several ways to carry out the task:

  • One letter per turn: Each participant runs forward, picks one letter, runs back and tags before the next participant can run forward and add a new letter to the word.
  • Multiple letters per turn: Each participant can add several letters each time they run forward, increasing the pace and difficulty.

Tips: Feel free to include additional physical tasks, for example:

  • climb to the top of the wall bars after creating one word
  • shoot a basketball into the hoop after creating two words

Variation

The activity can be carried out in different ways:

  • individually
  • in teams

Younger children can benefit from starting as a group and collaborating on the task.

Vary the task according to age and knowledge level

The difficulty can be increased by setting clearer academic requirements (e.g., specific word classes or thematic words), or by adjusting the time usage and number of letters per turn.
