Matrix

An exercise that practices throwing and catching, hand-eye coordination, agility, and reaction time.

  • 10+ years
  • Group size: 2+
  • Duration: 20 min
  • Ball sport
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space
  • Ball
  • Cones

To master this exercise, participants must be quick in their movements and able to focus on several things at once. This requires that they have already practiced ball handling and throwing-catching to some extent.

Set up the cones in a formation as shown in the illustration. Ensure a good distance between the rows of cones so that participants can bend down and move without touching the cones behind them.

Progression through the cone rows:

  1. Row 1: Stand in front of the first cone. Throw the ball high straight up in the air, touch one cone, and catch the ball again.
  2. Rows 2 and 3: Move one row forward so you are between row one and two. Throw the ball up in the same way, touch two cones before catching the ball. In the last row, you should manage to touch all three cones before catching the ball.
  3. Multiple directions: Set up the cones so that participants have to move in multiple directions (forward, backward, sideways) before catching the ball.

Practical tip: Create many small courts to avoid waiting, and make sure everyone has their own ball. Have a maximum of 2–3 participants per court.

Variation

  • Adjust the distance between the cones according to the participants' skill level.
  • Use different types of balls: small, large, light, and heavy for increased challenge. You can also use beanbags, chiffon cloths, or balloons. Focus on throwing the ball high and as straight up as possible.
