Playing on Paving Slabs

Suggestions for simple activities you can do on paved sidewalks.
- 1-10 years
- Group size: 1+
- Duration: 20 min
- Alternative physical activities
- Open space
Sidewalks offer many opportunities for fun activities. If they are paved, you can jump between and around the slabs. If they are not paved, you can draw with chalk and create your own 'slabs' on the ground. Activities become extra motivating when you maintain a playful focus and let the children help decide the game.
Activity Tips
- Walk forwards or backwards without stepping on the joint between the slabs.
- Pretend you are different animals and stand inside one slab. Jump as high as you can and land on the same slab. Which animals jump the highest?
- Repeat the jump, but now try to click your heels together in the air or touch your heels while jumping. What else can you do in the air?
- Jump forwards, backwards, or sideways from slab to slab.
- Jump over two slabs. Then try to jump over as many slabs as possible.
- Jump up, turn in a semicircle in the air, and land on the same slab again.
Challenge: Stand on one side of a row of slabs and jump alternately sideways, backwards, and forwards without touching the middle slab.
- Try the same challenge by hopping – first on your right foot, then on your left.
