Shuttle Relay on Skis

Suggestions on how to organize various ski relays.

  • 10+ years
  • Group size: 6+
  • Duration: 20 min
  • Relay
  • Snow / ice
  • Skis

Shuttle Relay A

Each team has two lanes: one at the start and one out on the course. The handover occurs when the person who is to receive stands ready with their hand behind a clear marker (e.g., a pole, stick, or cone). When the teammate comes in, they must 'high-five' each other for the handover to be valid.

Ideally, there are three athletes per team: two at the start and one out on the course. This provides good activity and a smooth flow to the relay. Let the relay run for approximately 10 minutes. The team that completes the most rounds within the time wins.

Shuttle Relay B

Same setup as in A, but here the children go out around poles or cones at the end of the lane, and the handover always happens at the starting area.

Shuttle Relay C

At the start, there is an empty bucket or pail. At the other end of the lane, there is a similar pail with, for example, 9 tennis balls, beanbags, or similar items.

The relay involves moving all the items:

  • from the pail out on the course to the pail at the start
  • and then back again, if you wish to run the relay in multiple rounds

The relays should be performed without ski poles to make handovers and movement easier and safer.

Variation

  • vary the length of the lanes based on the participants' level
  • shorter lanes for younger or less confident participants
  • longer lanes and more rounds for more experienced groups
