The City Game

The City Game

A warm-up game that challenges memory.

  • 6-14 years
  • Group size: 5+
  • Duration: 15 min
  • Alternative physical activities
  • Mountains, forests and fields
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space

All participants stand in a circle. One participant starts by turning to the person next to them and says: «Hi! I've been to the city today!» The person next to them asks: «What did you buy there?» The first participant answers, for example: «I bought a football.» Then, she and everyone else in the circle must mime kicking a football while standing in their place.

Then it's the next participant's turn. He turns to the person next to him and says: «Hi! I've been to the city today!» The person next to them asks again: «What did you buy there?» The participant now answers: «I bought a football and a fishing rod.» Everything previously bought must be repeated each time. Now everyone must mime both kicking a football and fishing with a fishing rod. The game continues around the circle until everyone has had a chance to say what they bought. Eventually, the movements become numerous, complex, and quite amusing, and the participants are guaranteed to get warm.

Variation

The more people involved, the more «items» need to be remembered, and the more complex and comical the movements become. This increases both the challenge and the fun of the game.

For the youngest, it is advisable to have few participants in the circle, for example, 5–6 children. As children get older, become more familiar with the game, and improve their memory, the number in the circle can be increased. The «purchases» and movements can be adapted to age, functional level, and interests, such as animals, sports equipment, or favorite characters.

If there are more than approximately 15 participants, the group can be divided into two or more circles so that everyone can have a good overview and actively participate.
