Form two lines. Each team chooses a ball distributor who stands behind one line, while the rest of the team lines up behind the other line. The throwing relay can be done in several ways. Here are three variations:
Squatting Relay
The first person in line throws the ball to the ball distributor and then squats down. The next person in line receives the ball, throws it to the ball distributor, and squats down, and so it continues until the last person has thrown. The game can end when everyone is sitting, or by repeating the exercise for several rounds.
Rotating Line
The first person in line throws the ball to the ball distributor and then runs to the back of the line. The rest of the line moves one spot forward towards the line. When the next person has thrown, they do the same: throw – run to the back – the line moves forward. The goal is to keep the game going as long as possible without chaos. If the team masters it well, the ball distributor can increase the pace of the passes to challenge the team further.
Alternate Sitting
Every other person in the line should receive the ball, throw it back to the ball distributor, and then sit down. For example, if there are six participants in the line, numbers 2, 4, and 6 should first receive the ball, throw it back, and sit down. When the last person (number 6) has thrown, it's numbers 1, 3, and 5's turn to do the same.
Variation
- Increase the distance between the ball distributor and the line to make the exercise more challenging.
- Vary how the ball is to be caught, for example, with one hand (then use a type of ball that everyone has a real chance to master).
