Activities that can promote the development of climbing skills:

  • Crawl over a bench.
  • The adult acts as a 'climbing frame' for the child.
  • Create an indoor obstacle course to be navigated by crawling or bear crawling.
  • Crawl forwards, sideways, and backwards.
  • Do wheelbarrow walks indoors, preferably over a small elevation.
  • Attach a rope to the top of a small outdoor slope and play mountain climbers.
  • Climb on stumps, rocks, mounds, slopes in bushes and trees.
  • Climb on chairs, tables, and crates.
  • Climb on a wall bars (if available).
  • Form pyramids and climb on each other.

Climbing requires both balance and coordination skills, as well as strength in the arms and legs. At the same time, the child will gain increased strength, balance, and coordination as a result of climbing practice.
