Define an area. One participant is 'it' (in a large group, several can be 'it' simultaneously) and freezes others by touching them and saying 'Freeze'. Those who are caught must stand completely still with legs wide apart. Participants who are still free can free the frozen ones by crawling between their legs. Those in the process of freeing someone cannot themselves be caught.
Variations
Vary how everyone moves: for example, hopping, jumping, crawling, walking backward, etc. Also vary how others are freed: for example, by running two laps around the person, 'mirroring' their position or movement, leapfrogging over their back, and similar.
The game can be played indoors in a gym, outdoors in an open space or in the woods, both winter and summer, or in the pool. In water, participants can free each other by swimming between their legs. It's important to have alternatives for those who cannot master this, for example, diving completely underwater or blowing bubbles in the water.
