Bench Relay

Bench Relay

A relay race using benches as the starting point.

  • 6+ years
  • Group size: 8+
  • Duration: 15 min
  • Relay
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space
  • Balance Bench

Four benches are placed together in a cross, resembling a plus sign (+). The group is divided into four teams. Each team sits one behind the other on their bench, so that each team has its own 'arm' of the cross.

The person at the back of each bench starts. When the teacher gives the signal, this student runs one round around the benches and sits down at the very front of their team's bench. As soon as they have sat down, it is the turn of the next person on the team who is sitting at the back to run. This continues until everyone on the team has run their round.

When everyone on the team has run and is seated on the bench, the entire team stands up to show they are finished. The teacher can let the teams compete to finish first, or simply focus on cooperation and execution without competition.

Variations

This relay can be varied in many ways. For example, each student can run multiple rounds, or running can be replaced with other forms of movement: jumping with feet together, hopping on one foot, crawling, walking on all fours, running backward, or moving like different animals. Small tasks can also be added along the way, such as touching a wall before sitting down, doing a jump, spinning around, or climbing over a bench.

Use your imagination and adapt the activity to the children's age, abilities, and energy. The goal is to create a playful, active, and inclusive relay where everyone gets to move and cooperate.
