The Hopping Game

The Hopping Game

An activity that challenges eye-foot coordination.

  • 1-5 years
  • Group size: 2+
  • Duration: 15 min
  • Partner exercise
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Indoor
  • Open space

Pair up in twos. One child sits on the floor with their legs spread and arms supporting them backwards. The other child should now try to walk around their friend on the floor without touching their arms or legs. They should walk or hop between the legs, arms, and around the body of the sitting child. Start at a very slow pace, and gradually increase the speed if the children want to and master the task.

If someone finds it scary to sit on the floor or is afraid of being stepped on, you can instead lay out a pair of trousers or a sweater in a star shape and let the children hop or trip over the 'parts' of the clothing. Hula hoops and sticks can also be used as obstacles to walk between and over.

An adult can also sit on the floor first, so that the children can practice hopping gently around and between arms and legs.
