Create a slalom course on a relatively flat area, preferably organized as a circular course. From start to finish, the course should be approximately 50–100 meters.
Use poles, stakes, cones, or similar to mark the gates. The course should be 'open,' meaning not too narrow or traversed, so that children can skate through and gain good speed. Place the gates approximately 6–8 meters apart, and include 6–8 turns. Experiment and adjust as you go, according to skill level and space.
Children choose their own technique, but most will eventually start skating.
Variations
- The course can be completed both with and without poles.
- Facilitate different ways to use the course:
This provides variety and motivation for children with different skill levels.
