Free the Captain

A team game where participants practice throwing and catching while challenging strategy and cognitive skills.
- 6-15 years
- Group size: 8+
- Duration: 15 min
- Ball sport
- Gym / Sports hall
- Open space
- Ball
- Gym Mat
Divide the group into teams of four people. Each team consists of one captain and three outfield players. The teams compete to be the first to complete the task.
Here's how:
- At the start, the outfield players stand on a mat or a clearly defined area. The captain stands on a base, for example, five meters away (distance adjusted to skill level), with three balls.
- The captain throws a ball to an outfield player, who must catch and hold the ball without dropping it. This player is now 'free', takes the ball, and runs to the captain's base.
- This continues until all three outfield players have received their ball and reached the base.
- When all outfield players are at the base, the captain runs to the mat/area where the outfield players originally stood.
- There, the captain must receive a pass from each of the outfield players, without dropping any of the balls.
- When the captain stands on the mat/area with three balls in hand, the team is finished.
Variations
- Adjust the number of players and balls per team.
- Vary the passing method (kick, throw, bounce, volley) and how players move (run, hop, crawl, etc.).
- Run the exercise as a relay, where everyone on the team must have been captain before the team is completely finished.
- Use different types of balls (large/small, soft/hard, light/heavy).
- Increase or decrease the distance between the base and the mat.
