Handstand 1

Handstand 1

Pair exercise that challenges core muscles and balance

  • 10+ years
  • Group size: 2+
  • Duration: 15 min
  • Partner exercise
  • Mountains, forests and fields
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space
  • Gym Mat

One participant stands with feet wide apart and knees slightly bent. The other places their hands on each of the partner's thighs and gently kicks up to come into a handstand between their legs.

The standing person grips around the hip area of the one going into a handstand and stops the movement when the body is vertical. Together, they find balance and stand steady in a controlled handstand.

Safety

  • ensure participants are well warmed up before the exercise to reduce the risk of injury
  • divide into pairs who are roughly similar in height and weight
  • use mats or other soft surfaces

Adjust how high and how fast one "kicks up" into a handstand, according to the group's level and confidence.
