Handstand 2

Handstand 2

A partner exercise that challenges core muscles and balance.

  • 10+ years
  • Group size: 2+
  • Duration: 15 min
  • Partner exercise
  • Mountains, forests and fields
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space
  • Gym Mat

One participant gets well-balanced on all fours on a soft surface. The other kneels beside them.

Then:

  • the one kneeling takes an underhand grip across the abdominal region of the one on all fours
  • gets a firm grip with one hand near the opposite hip bone
  • places the other hand near the sternum

With controlled force, he/she tries to lift themselves up into a balance with their legs extended straight up in the air.

Variation

Once the movement becomes consistent, it can be incorporated into a small 'series' where it is performed calmly and fluidly. Participants can also try simple 'tricks' with their legs in the air, for example:

  • split
  • straddle
  • small rotations or movements
