The Calculator

Practice number symbols, different calculation methods, and basic arithmetic through physical activity.
- 6-14 years
- Group size: 4+
- Duration: 30 min
- Alternative physical activities
- Physically Active Learning
- Gym / Sports hall
- Indoor
- Open space
Divide participants into groups of 4–6 people. Each group gets a defined area of at least 2×4 meters.
The leader says or writes an arithmetic problem on a whiteboard/board. The groups must collaboratively find the answer and 'write' the solution on the ground by forming the numbers with their bodies.
Example:
If the leader says 2×5, the participants must collectively form the number 10 with their bodies.
If there are many in the group, the leader can also ask them to create the 'equals' sign (=).
Variation
Let each group prepare their own arithmetic problems.
- First, one group 'writes' their arithmetic problem with their bodies.
- Then the other group must 'write' the solution with their bodies.
The exercise can easily be adapted for older students by providing problems at their level, for example with:
- decimal numbers
- fractions
Then the groups can be challenged to 'write' both more complex numbers and symbols.
