The Flyer

The Flyer

A partner exercise that challenges core strength and balance.

  • 6+ years
  • Group size: 2+
  • Duration: 20 min
  • Partner exercise
  • Mountains, forests and fields
  • Gym / Sports hall
  • Open space
  • Gym Mat

One participant lies on their back on a soft, flat surface. The hip joint is flexed to approximately 90 degrees, so the legs point straight up. The arms are placed out to the sides to provide the best possible stability.

The second participant places their lower abdomen against the soles of the feet of the person lying down, and tries to find balance while holding their partner's hands. Then, the person on top extends into as horizontal a 'flying position' as possible. When the balance is good, they can try to let go of each other's hands and stretch their arms out to the sides like wings.

Safety

  • ensure a soft surface (mats)
  • check that participants are warmed up before starting, to reduce the risk of injury
  • monitor comfort and mastery – provide extra spotting for unsure pairs
  • consider grouping in threes, where the third person's task is to spot and support

Variation

Once participants are more confident, the exercise can be developed:

  • perform a small 'sequence' where you calmly and gracefully move into and out of the flying position
  • try simple 'tricks' with the legs: spread them into a 'split', splay, small up and down movements
  • let participants hold hands at the start, and gradually release more as they master the balance

Adjust the difficulty level according to the group's strength, flexibility, and confidence.
