The Nut Gatherer

The Nut Gatherer

Basic skiing skills are challenged at a faster pace.

  • 6+ years
  • Group size: 4+
  • Duration: 20 min

  • Skis

Divide the group into two teams. Create a rectangular track of approx. 20–30 meters, with a clear line at each short end. The teams stand behind their respective lines, at each end of the track.

In the middle of the track, place a large pile of objects. These can be:

  • clothespins
  • mittens
  • balls
  • beanbags
  • twigs

Use whatever is available. These objects are called 'nuts'.

The goal for each team is to collect as many nuts as possible within a given time, for example 2 minutes, or until the pile in the middle is empty. It is only allowed to take one nut at a time. Each nut taken should be placed behind the starting line on your team's half of the track.

When the time is up, count how many nuts each team has. The team with the most nuts wins.

Variation

An alternative variation is to let the teams collect nuts from each other's 'store'.

Both teams start with an equal number of objects placed in their own designated area behind their starting line. Participants on each team must then try to collect as many nuts as possible from the opponent's nut pile and transport them back to their own area.
