Divide participants into groups of four. The leader spreads all the word cards haphazardly across the floor. The groups line up in a row, like in a relay race, behind a cone or line approximately 7–10 meters from the word cards. Each group receives one die.
The die determines which type of word to fetch:
- Fetch a German noun
- Fetch a Norwegian noun
- Fetch a German verb
- Fetch a Norwegian verb
- Fetch a German adjective
- Fetch a Norwegian adjective
How the game is played:
- The group rolls the die.
- One participant runs to the word cards and finds a word that matches the word class and language indicated by the die.
- The card is brought back to the group.
- The group sorts the word into the correct pile – a total of six piles (German/Norwegian × noun/verb/adjective).
The game continues until all word cards have been collected. The group with the most correctly placed cards wins. The entire group is responsible for ensuring the words are in the correct word class and that they can translate the German words into Norwegian.
To practice distinguishing between the word classes noun, verb, and adjective, while participants expand their vocabulary in both German and Norwegian – through physically active learning.
Variation
The activity can easily be adapted to other subjects or themes, such as Norwegian word classes, vocabulary in other languages, or subject-specific terms in various school subjects.
